अंग्रेजी में किसी व्यक्ति द्वारा कही गई बात को कहने के दो ढंग होते हैं।
1.Direct Speech (Direct Narration) 2. Indirect Speech (Indirect Narration)
1. Direct Speech-जब वक्ता के शब्दों को ज्यों का त्यों कहा जाए। जैसे
Payal said, "I am playing."
2. Indirect Speech-जब वक्ता के शब्दों को श्रोता (सुनने वाला) अपने शब्दों में कहता है।
 जैसे-
Payal said that she was playing.
Note : सामान्य बोलचाल में इन्हें  Direct  तथा  Indirect  कहते हैं।
                                      DIRECT SPEECH
Direct Speech के निम्न दो भाग होते हैं।

1. Reporting Verb        2. Reported Speech

निम्न Table में दोनों भाग देखें

Note : Reported Speech के वाक्य को Inverted Commas (".......") में रखते हैं।
निम्न वाक्यों को पढ़ें
1, Direct : Krish said. "went to Delhi yesterday."
Indirect:    Krish said that he had gone to Delhi the previous day.

2. Direct : Krish said to Gita, "You are happy today."
Indirect :   Krish told Gita that she was happy that day.

3. Direct : Ritu said to me. "Do you play cricket ?''
Indirect:   Ritu asked me if/whether played cricket.
